Agitated hornets.

Still neither sight nor sound of the electrician, joiner, decorator, plumber or gutter repair man. Maybe they've already stopped work for Christmas ? Instead the gardeners arrived, unannounced. Four young men in red boiler suits showed up in two large white vans and were soon hyper-actively trimming the hedge, cutting down errant branches, and generally tidying up the garden. Wilf went out to briefly christen the tyres but faced with what sounded like four very large and very angry hornets he soon retreated inside.

For Wilf some days are good, some days are bad. Thankfully, overwhelmingly good. Over the last two months we've been spolit by Wilfs remarkable cortisone fuelled health. It's been all too easy to forget the tumour working away inside. This morning another reminder that each day now is precious. He simply refused to come with me into town for croissants. An unmistakeable look that said " I'll just stay here and rest " . My first trip to the bar alone in over a year. A lonely rite of passage. Maybe he'll feel like it tomorrow? A time for patience and love.

  2. Oh, Mongoose! How sad & lonely for you. We hope Wilf is feeling better and that the nice weather returns, so he might enjoy getting out of the house once more. But mostly we hope Wilf remains pain free [we hope he is] and just slowly and peacefully completes his journey. And that he gets one more Christmas.

  3. Oh sorry you had to venture out without Wilf, I guess he knows better what he should do at this point.

  4. The beer and absinthe crowd and the peroxide server were probably shocked too! A dab of coconut ice cream will probably help. xo to our friend Wilf

  6. Loss is all about formerly shared pleasures that can no longer take place. So sorry, the croissant run without Wilf must have been hard.

I guess if you employ enough different workmen, then the chances are that at least one will turn up...

So please, give him lots of cuddles and gazillions of bisous on his lovely head, for me Angus.

  13. Hi. I've been reading your blog every day. It is a bit same situation here. The Mop, a very tiny little PON bitch of 4 years, was diagnozed with heart defect one year ago, and put on cortisone for allergies. She was expected to have just a few months left.
We got a whole year of that extra-time, as I call it. The best year of her life, thanks to the cortisone: no itchying, no repetitive ear infections, and no biting toes or upset stomach. One very happy and content dog. Luckily we live on the countryside aswell, so she can choose herself how much she spends time outside and gets exercise etc.
A week ago she had her first bad arrythmia heart attach and I thought she'd die in my arms. But after a couple of minutes she was fine again. But now I know the end is near, as happy and content she seems on the outside. It can happen anytime. So every single moment is even more valuable.

We have been building/renovating a big house on the countryside. It just needs some finishing touch to be ready. The electricians, well, I think I last saw them in october? They came on a friday and promised to come again on monday. We are still waiting for that monday to come!
Then theyy phoned 3 weeks ago and said they will come next monday. No sight of them, still. Do they just vanish in the air suddenly??

I really hope Wilf will join you again for a croissant. Or may you can bring him one at home. New routines as situation changes - that is what we do with The Mop.

  28. Lonely visit to town it was, but perhaps he just needed a bit of extra rest today. Hopefully the evening and the rest of the days will have your faithful, delightful companion by your side.

  30. That has to have been a moment of profound reflection. I hope Wilf just needed a bit more rest and that he felt better by the time you came home. With croissant, I suspect.

  31. I read each post with forboding knowing how quickly time is marching forward. I feel your pain and relive my dogs death in 1992...can it be almost 19 years?...so now I am looking for a shelter dog around 2 years old to adopt due to my devotion to reading about Wilf. Thank you for sharing your life with Wilf each day. He is truly a charming fellow!

  32. I too hope the Wilf just needs a bit of rest today and he will have more visit to the cafe.

I think of Wilf and those who love him everyday and hope there are many more good days to come.

  35. Wilf's no dummy - I'd have come inside too if there were angry hornets outside!

My heart is heavy and sad that he didn't want to come with you to the bakery. I know he loves to go and for him to want to stay home must've been difficult for you. I do hope you brought him a little piece of croissant.

  36. Oh dear. Maybe he'll desire a croissant demain??? Sounds like a wild time outside with the men in red...
