Archaeological detritus.

The regional archaeologist is coming today. Monsieur Risottos recent excavations for the septic tank have unearthed a cannon ball, a piece of roman column, a section of rather unexciting stone frieze, a Napoleonic road marker and a strange pagan figure carved into sandstone. These now sit beside the well in the courtyard waiting to be studied and photographed by the 'authorities'. I somehow feel that this is not the end of the story.

For Wilf a day to bark at passing tractors and dream of bowls piled high with cauliflower cheese , fish pie and coconut ice cream. His weight is still falling so the vet has suggested that we mix together his diabetic kibbles with some of the previous low protein ones to see if that stems the weight loss.

The family fellow has now got to the stage where he doesn't like to go out alone when its dark. Come ten o'clock at night Wilf and yours truly can be found walking slowly up the drive and then even more slowly back. Dogs don't complain. Despite his failing senses the old chap has an air to him that says he's just glad to have the chance to love and to play and to look up at the stars.

  2. Have you considered opening a museum? Exhibit A: some boring old stone frieze, Exhibit B: costumes worn by Madame Bay, Exhibit C: The long lost missing egg cup......

    Big Tuesday hugs to Wilf!

  6. Exhibit 5: illuminated electric Christmas star. Any time of year, as you like.

    Wilf, again, keeping us centered.

  7. My husband in particular would find the items from the excavations interesting--All I have ever found in a 'digging' is an 'Evening in Paris' perfume bottle from the 1950's! Maybe the 'strange pagan figure' is somehow related to the UFO's?-!

Angus, I do hope the diet change helps Wilf to regain a little bit of lost weight, and I continue to be thankful that he's continuing to enjoy his days and nights too!

  10. Good morning sweet Wilf. You are right about being glad of the small and sweet times. Oh, and coconut ice cream too. Photo number 2 is your best today.

  11. Good Morning Swet Wilfie- I bet if you were feeling better you would have unearthed those finds on your own, be sure to supervise the "experts" when they come to examine the treasures. Good luck gaining some weight back, walk slowly so as to enjoy the view, and be sure to take your seeing-eye human out with you after dark.

  12. The idea of a museum is outstanding. Please add a list of Wilf's thoughts for the day...One good thing about slow nocturnal walks is the stars (well, I guess more than one). I am sure you see far more than I in my little rural community. March on, Wilf - one step at a time - your legacy with Angus is sharing your joie de vivre.

  13. Now I know why life in my little town isn't nearly as exciting as life in yours. There have been no Roman roads going through here ever! Why do I have visions of your yard with giant dirt piles in it?

I think Wilf is wise to appreciate old age. No doubt he deserves it after all the work he's done in his life!

If dogs could go to restaurants here in the States, I'd be a happy camper! It couldn't be worse than everyone lugging their screaming children in every place.

  14. Fascinating discoveries by Mr. Pasta! Looking forward to the results of the study. Perhaps the missing egg cup will be discovered among the treasures....! Eat hearty, Wilf!!

  15. Everything has been written on Mr. Risotto's discoveries... Soooo, happy new week sweet Wilf, enjoy each new day as you did before.

You are always in my thoughts Angus and the boy, as my little Mademoiselle (she is a lovely cat) loves to go outside at 2 or 3 in the morning, and I, too, look at the stars, like you do.

Bisous, cuddles, and love for you Wilfee.

  16. Our Mom doesn't see well at night either, so she doesn't like to go out alone and appreciates Wilf's concerns. When our Dogdad is away on business, we get a long walk before dark and then a quick trip to the "pee bush" a few steps away at bedtime.

A Gershwin song (paraphrased) comes to mind: "Holding paws at midnight,
    'Neath a starry sky...
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it -- if you try.

Wirey woofs to dear Wilf!!! Barking is one of the things we do best!

  18. What a find not what I'd find digging up here in Alaska, have done that and what comes out is 'blue mud'. I like your discoveries so much better. The below post comment, I decided around in the 80's to give up wine drinking for one year as I felt it was too addictive to me, not one glass but two or more everyday. I easily did it and felt such a freedom not drinking anymore that I never went back to it.

  21. Enjoy the slow PONderings....too many people now adays forget to look up...savour the stars, the moon, the rest will always be there. May Wilf enjoy the slowness, the ease of the night path. Love the new top picture as well! Keep going Wilf....and ask for a second helping of cauliflower cheese!

With love, from the melting Canadians,

  22. I have learned many good life lessons from dogs. Do not complain when your growing older sets more limits on your world is one good lesson. Also do not get so caught up in what you can not do, but do what you still can. Is the lesson I have learned from Wilf.

Wilf thanks for being such a great teacher!

    Susan

  25. Nighttime walks together are nice. Around here the coyotes howl, sometimes sing, and upon a few occassions have joined in together from north, south, east and west. Nature surround sound. The bawling of a calf for it's mama and her answering call.
Gain a wee bit of weight Wilf, ok? Don't forget your status of Honoray Texan. And keep shouldering on sweet boy.
hugs to you all(tho I think it might make the M'ongoose a bit embarrassed...such a display!)

  27. Interesting finds at your house! Years ago, my family lived in Holland. I was just a kid at the time and cleaning out my closet when I noticed something sticking up out of the floor. I bent down to pick it up and it was a very old $100 Dutch bill. My mom took it to the bank who told her it was worthless. I don't care, I still have it and like to look at it once in awhile.
