Christmas comes early .

For the next four weeks life as we know it comes to a complete halt here in France Profonde . The Rugby World Cup starts in New Zealand this weekend, and all eyes , in this rugby crazy part of the world, are on Les Bleus. Sitting reading the local paper at the cafe it seems that coverage of anything and everything else has been dropped for the duration . Crisis in the Euro ? Forget it .

Much to Wilfs delight the under five and under eight squads have entered into the spirit of things by setting out a team of rugby playing scarecrows on the village green . Their fathers , aided by copious quantities of lager , have been installing a large flat screen tv in the salle de fetes in readiness for the first match . Wilf has done his bit by carefully christening each of the straw figures.

Angus has also been preparing . A trip down to the wine merchants in Toulouse with Wilf. A special deal on end of summer wines . Domaine d'Ott , the Queen of roses , and Chateau la Calisse , a light Provencal white . A couple of cases of champagne just in case Scotland wins a match . Wilf happily settles down on the floor to talk to the shop staff and enjoy a hair tousling while Angus saunters round the wine racks . Both equally happy .

This morning , r
eturning from our walk , we stop to chat to the old farmer . He's clambering up a ladder towards his balcony with length of electrical cable in his hand. '' More rewiring ? " I ask by way of polite conversation . ' Christmas lights ' he replies .

  1. A couple of cases of champagne in case Scotland wins a match.... A case of low expectations or in anticipation of repeat visits from the mayor?

  2. Christchurch was remembered today and we had a visit from the English team... who would have played here originally. http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/sport/rugby/world-cup-canterbury/5580053/Fans-mob-English-players-at-airport

Actually starting to look forward to it - lovely to see so many teams and visitors flocking over here ;) Haven't laid in any champagne though - but mouth watered at your photos!!!

  3. We've got a neighbor who's ahead of the farmer; they never took down last year's Christmas lights.

We love American football and we've been watching Aussie Rules football recently thanks to an Aussie dog blog friend who helped explain it. We'll have to check in to rugby, but good luck to Scotland! We're sure Angus will put the champers to good use, either to celebrate or drown his disappointment.

Bet you're putting on your winter coat, Wilf. Jed has already started on his, and it's still in the mid-80's here.

  5. Come on Angus... surely we'll win one match?! But that did make me laugh. We're conditioned to have low sports expectations in this part of the world.
I can't believe how autumnal it looks on your village green... lots of leaves on the ground already.

  7. I never really thought the two went together - rugby and Christmas, that is. But wine and rugby and wine and Christmas do, so why not rugby and Christmas?

  10. A couple of cases??? Is that a typo? Did you mean a couple of bottles?? :) Good luck to Scotland!!

Those scarecrows are kind of creepy!! But all in all, as long as Wilf had a good, fun day, this is the most important!! Keep on going Wilf, lovely boy!

  12. I notice that you said life will come to a halt in France for the next four weeks - perhaps a prediction that the French won't make it past the semi-finals. Here in NZ all talk is of rugby for the next 7 1/2 weeks!

No doubt your little polar bear will be by your side, with his favourite rugby ball, as you watch Scotland play. I hope you've put aside a few bottles of sparkling water for Wilf to savour for when you and the font are drinking the proper bubbly stuff.

    Lots of woofs,
    Riley

  13. This could get pretty rowdy, Wilfee, you might want to keep a hideaway ready for yourself during the tense moments!

Cheers, and hugs for Wilf from

  14. Maybe the farmer is putting up string lights in celebration of the Rugby World Cup. You know, some people call the string lights Christmas lights even when used for summer garden parties. Do you think thats what he means? No? .....I don't either.
So glad Wilf had a wonderful time in the scarecrow patch! A delightful treat for a boy doggie, for sure! Love to all.

  15. Isn't he the same farmer who still had his Christmas lights up in April? Why did he even bother to take them down?

You have to love a town where even the scarecrows get in on the town action!
