On the case .

1:08 am . Out of the darkness a banshee wailing . The window frames rattle and shake . Wilf comes hurtling up the stairs and into the dressing room . One panicking old PON in search of reassurance. His body trembling .By now the whole house awake .

Some airline is taking possession of a new Airbus from the facility at Toulouse. Usually these delivery flights don't bother us . Either we're well away from the flight path or they're already at twenty five thousand feet and climbing , quietly, away . Their passage no more than a gentle rustling in the distance . Not this morning . Whether by accident or design a huge six hundred seater comes lumbering over our little corner of paradise , engines screaming . From the garden we watch it thunder down the valley , lights flashing , tailplane floodlit. Two thousand, three thousand feet ?

Touch so important for a blind dog . For humans touch represents guidance , comfort , tenderness . For a dog who can't see it's so much more . It's a sign that his packs on the case , his flock safe. Two minutes of quiet stroking and his heart beat slows. Much yawning and sighing. Then he's asleep again . Danger past , forgotten . By now the new plane will be well on its way to China . Here, the old PON's still asleep.

  1. Wilf clearly worships you Angus and probably thinks you can call Airbus and get the flight path altered.

We see the test flights over our place near Tarbes.

  7. It's so difficult when we can't explain things to them, but it sounds as if your loving presence was all the explanation Wilf needed. (I was in aviation for the past 12 years (until redundancy in October, drat) so I'm a bit of a junkie for things like that and would've loved to have seen it myself!)

  8. A very touching story of the fears of an old dog and the love of his owners.

  9. Oh poor Wilf, how very upsetting for him. Thank goodness he calmed quickly and went back to his slumbers.

  10. i always wonder why he chooses to sleep at the bottom of the stairs instead of nearer you and your bed at night. at least if he wakes and is confused he wouldn't fall down them. that could be very bad.
but as proven he can fly up them when he needs you, as he did this morning!
i love his pictures today on the terrace with the red geraniums in the background. that dearest little trusting face. the best wee bear in the world!
    love,

  11. THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING! That would have been my reaction and the Boyz would surely have thought it was the end of the world if they react the way they do to the simple roar of a UPS or FEDEX truck!

Wilf looks especially adorable in the photos today! Glad he knew how to seek out comfort when the banshee noise awakened him.

  12. A banshee would be better than a 600 place Airbus buzzing your valley! The nerve! Poor Wilf!
Sometimes even the bravest shepherd needs reassurance .

  13. I'd have been having heart palpitations, too! I'm glad the plane passed by overhead, at least.

  14. Having had a similar experience, that is probably one of the most scary, especially when woken up from a deep sleep. Poor darling Wilf! Touch is the best reassurance you can give, along with perhaps some coconut ice cream? Even at 0130? Keep on going Wilf!!

  15. Awwwww... Poor dear Wilf...SO glad he had touch and reassurance from "the Master"...Sounds like our little Woobie when there are fireworks, peals of thunder...or a rare gunshot "somewhere way out there".... {{{HUGS}}} sent to the scruffy boy...Probably wasn't a light awakening for humans either!...When the vibrations from a thunderous Airbus can be felt coming right up through the earth into the very floors of your house...it's a little unnerving to say the least..!! All is well that ends well...zzzzzz

  16. Poor Wilf this is Terrible. If you need us to all call them put out the number or the email even. We can flood their lines.

  17. Yikes, what a shock. Is that legal, in the middle of the night in France Profonde? There must be a few regulations to stop any recurrences.

Glad Wilf knows just where his security Angus is to be found in an emergency.

  18. I would have probably reacted the same way Wilf did. Thankful that he has such loving arms to comfort him.
