Not a polar bear.

The first frost of the year. Wilf looked out of the front door, looked at the frost on the grass, then turned around and lay on his bed. ' I may look like a polar bear but I'm not '. It took the magic word 'croissant' to stir him from his warm, matressed comfort.

Each day now we're taking him somewhere new for the first walk of the day. A wave of fresh scents and sights seems to stimulate him and get him powering along . This morning he charged along the footpath of the Canal du Midi head down in a riot of fresh smells. A full twenty minutes of fun filled sniffing and snorting. A few joggers on the other side of the canal but not a single walker or dog on our side. To look at him you'd think he was the happiest, healthiest boy on the planet.

Back into the market town for a coffee and the promised croissant. Too cold to sit outside under the terrace so into the cafe proper. I dutifully shake hands and say 'bonjour' to the two barmen, the waitress, and all the early morning absinthe and beer drinkers. Formality a factor of French life even amongst our dipsomaniac friends. A loud chorus of 'bonjour Wilfeee' and much hair tousling as we come through the door. Add to the scene a bowl of water and half a croissant, torn gently into pieces by the peroxide waitress, and you have one very content family fellow.

  4. Frost? You should see it round here just now.
Please tell Wilf that we know he is not a polar bear, and give him yet more hugs and best wishes from a very snowy Aberdeen.
    Cheers, Gail and Bertie.

  9. Your photo of the Canal du Midi brings back wonderful memories - we travelled along that exact route on our 'noddy boat' boat a few years back. Wonder if your peroxide waitress seved us our croissants and coffee - can't remember seeing Mr Wilfee though... :)

  12. Wow Wilffie you scored a whole half croissant! Luckiest dog in France. I pull up your blog to share with my 10 year old niece, and she promptly christened you as "The Cutest Dog in the whole World". Best wishes and happy "Food" hunting you little pretend polar bear!

  13. For a moment there, based on a photo, I thought that Wilf had gone in search of the elusive Josephine!

I love how the cafe people (dipsomaniacs) and waitress treat Wilf like a king! He deserves it.

  14. Wilf is way cuter than a polar bear! I dream of living in a place where we could walk into the bar like that!

  15. Atta boy Wilf!! We love to hear the words "charged along the footpath". You look lovely by the way. Hopefully the croissant will be a whole one next time ;)

    Keep going Wilf!

  16. Ah, Wilf, my rescue Betty agrees with you re: inclement and cold weather - she will put her nose out the door, then back up and climb onto her couch from which she will wait for the day to warm up. So glad the French aren't stuffy about dogs being in a restaurant like Americans. Oh, I just remembered - I brought home a sugar cookie to share w/my pups. Have a great day - you look terrific, Wilf.

  19. So sweet, I love that they welcomed Wilf into the cafe. None of the places around here would have done that.
