Two in the morning - a great time to call the States.

One of those nights that might euphemistically be called difficult. On yesterdays morning walk Wilf found and swallowed a small dead rodent - a vole or shrew or possibly even a small mole. All I glimpsed was a short wispy tail disappearing into his mouth. From discovery to delighted despatch took all of a nano second. Not even the chance to shout out a futile ' No ! Leave it '. By one thirty in the morning the small rodent was starting to cause some discomforture and by two its increasingly rapid passage through his system was having the anticipated effect. Trips outside into the garden , wearing a dressing gown and a pair of bright blue Crocs , at two o'clock, three and then four fifteen. This morning yours truly is suffering from sleep deprivation but Wilf is full of vim and vigour.

The small hours are the perfect time to do all those things that are otherwise left until later. Two in the morning in France is eight at night in Princeton and five in Stanford - a great time to call the Croc owners aka the gannets . It's also a great time to read magazines from cover to cover. And I mean cover to cover. This morning I now know that Bristol Palin is still on Dancing with the Stars ( apparently this is thanks in no small measure to the votes of Sarahs political supporters ) and that it is impossible to buy a copy of the dress that Kate Middleton wore when she announced her engagement to Prince William. It seems that the Issa sapphire blue dress - ' a perfect blend of modernity and conservatism' - retails for $615 and Harvey Nicols' in London have been " simply inundated with callers from the US wanting to get their hands on one ".

I recounted these timeless pieces of information to 'the font' as we sat with Wilf at the cafe in the square. " Goodness, you must have been bored " came the reply. For his part Wilf was ignoring me and giving the croissant bearing waitress his best ' I love you ' look. So much for Angus the renaissance man. In future I'll stick to rugby and golf.

  1. If we eat anything like that, it tends to stay down. We have cast iron stomachs! (We think late night tv is just as bad......Infomercials or evangelists. But you're all set for some of the quiz shows.

  2. So glad to see Wilf is still up to normal doggy tricks and still enjoying life's "small pleasures" !!

We have been known to yank a rotted rodent out of Lulu's mouth by the tail. Dogs just don't make the connectiion between a moment's pleasure and the misery that follows several hours later. And they definitely don't understand "I told you so".!!

  3. Oh, pooor Angus, i am so sorry for this uncomfortable night ! But don't you think the most important is that Wilfee is ok now ? May be is it because he needs to come back to very simple food, instead of boeuf braisé aux morilles, and croissants... Sorry Angus to tease you, but, it is so good to know that the little boy is still there.
Cuddles and lots of bisous for you sweet Wilf.

  4. I love the 2nd picture this morning--Something about Wilf's expression, the topic and seeing the blue crocs in the background has given me a grin! Every dog owner has 'enjoyed' nights like that--I guess after all the amazing 5 star cuisine that Wilf has been eating it has made him unable to enjoy the 'simple flavors' of something found on the ground! At least the positive (???) from all of this is that you are now caught up on the tabloid news--What's going on with Lindsay Lohan? ;-)

I hope it's a quiet day and you're able to get your rest.

  5. Well WE appreciate these bits of information. In case any of that comes up in conversation. Unlikely, it's true, but we're prepared just in case. I'm glad that Wilf is feeling better after his unauthorized snack. I think Angus is going to need a nap, though.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  6. Hmm - The Herd applauds Wilf on his culinary selection - and on the deprivation of sleep of the human - a goal we always try to achieve.

  7. Oh no, Wilf! Sounds like some of the things that go on around here with Tugie the Toy Poodle and her crazy feline sisters. Here I sit sippin' coffee this morning and reading blogs. Cats don't let us sleep late on weekends. They want breakfast.

  8. That's what we like to see. Turn a nuit blanche because of an upset tum into an opportunity to call the States. Our time zone does not favour any relatives/friends but we (I) can catch up on a few bits of reading. This a.m. at 04:30 Himself was standing on the island of the fish pond. Watching the rain he said.

  9. Isn't it amazing, the polarity in their appreciation from fine cusine to road kill?

  10. In a word...yuk! Maggie Mae, however, is applauding Wilf's accomplishment and asks the obvious question, "did it taste like chicken?" ;)

    Blessings and Love,

  12. There is nothing like a little canine gastric discomfort to help you reaquaint with the latest gossip. We hope Wilf is feeling better this morning!

  14. Oh my, what a night. I know the nanosecond routine. Dogs seem to know that if they can get it "down the hatch" before we can run over to them... it's theirs!

Sounds like a very long night. At least you've educated me about why our intellectual news station (NPR) had a headline about Dancing with the Stars. I was mystified but didn't hang around to hear the story.

  15. No worries M'ongoose, I believe Tesco has created a replica of Kate's dress for a mere £16!

Wilf has been on such a gourmet diet of late, no doubt the mouse was a palate (and colon) cleanser. Or he thought it was a vole au vents? Bring on the beurre blanc and the coconut ice cream!

  16. I'm surprised with all his culinary sophistication that a small rodent was his desired choice and that it caused so much stomach distress. Ah, I love this post! It sums up the joys of dog ownership so well!

If you want to impress 'the font' even further, feel free to mention that some man in (I believe) Ohio may go to jail for ten years for shooting his television with a shot gun after Bristol Palin stayed on. :P I know how they love Bristol over there in France! I just don't know why.

  18. I thought everyone knew that the hours between midnight and 5AM last for 120 minutes each - especially if you're not feeling well.

  19. Oh dear...Garbage guts and sleep deprivation!...Don't we know it so well at this end of the pond.
Hope you all feel more rested soon.

  20. Im guessing the 3rd photo is Wilf and his 'I love you' look....he has it down to a tee! I glad to hear he is feeling better! here is to a good nights sleep.

  21. So happy Wilf's vim & vigor returned...and I'm hoping, yours will also very soon.
Miss. Ginger the Dachshund recently brought up half a mouse out of some ivy and started chewing on it and I had to stick my finger in her mouth and get-it-out! Can I just say....yucky times a million...I thought of it for days...but was so glad I saved her from a possible night such as Wilfy experienced (not to mention you).
    xo J~

  22. I'm glad Wilf is doing better. Sorry he kept you up all night.

The thought of you in a dressing gown and crocs brought a smile to my face. I don't suppose you got any pictures of that?

  23. but the good news is that Wilf got to eat a treat and it went through his system just fine. you're a fine dog dad.

(and yes, Bristol is still on Dancing. she just may win it all, which would be a great travesty to dance)

  24. May we commend to your attention the marvelous invention known as the doggie door? Of course, it has to lead into a fenced yard for safety, but it's saved mama many a sleepless night. Abby shares the Scotsmad Scotties' cast iron stomach. Maybe because she is half-Beagle, so she shares that ground-dog constitution.

Anyway, it's good to see Wilf still enjoys partaking in the quintessential doggie pleasures and is none the worse for wear. In short, a normal source for a bad night, not the disease-related source we feared when we read the header.

  25. I wonder if you heard about the 67 year old man in Wisconsin who jumped up, grabbed a shotgun, and fired at his television screen upon seeing dear Bristol continue on to the final round. This resulted in a 15 hour standoff with police. At the end the man was quoted as saying that he "didn't think Bristol was a very good dancer".

Not quite as good as a dead vole, but close.
