A dogs gift.

That great rarity - a day without builders, decorators , plumbers or gardeners. Incredibly , no Madame Bay, no mayor , no head banging Goths . After a leisurely post-breakfast saunter through the village Wilf settles down on the doorstep for a restorative nap . He resurfaces two hours later . It's a warm day . While I set up the lunch table on the terrace the family fellow wanders into the kitchen to give ' the font ' his advice on cooking . Creme de Potimarron et lard croustillant, Magret a l'Orange et riz complet, finally Cake au poires et gingembre . He gets some tiny shredded slivers of duck with his kibbles . Ginger cake added to that list of 'most favoured ' treats . He falls asleep under the table, on his back, snoring gently . I'd swear there's a smile on his face .

He's been a little more confused this past week . Two or three times a day he walks into a room and immediately forgets why he's there . We find him standing staring blindly at walls or back of chairs . He'll stand like that for ten or fifteen minutes , his mind in neutral . Other than that he's in a sweet spot . Energy for three walks a day , a hearty appetite , interest in what's going on around him . Eyes and gums still healthy , a sense of mischief as he blusters noisily through the fallen leaves. . Constant laughter - a dogs gift to his family.

PS - A special early Thanksgiving week thank you to Pamela and Edward at the wonderful www.fromthehouseofedward.blogspot.com blog.

  1. Confusion is only a minor thing - even humans wander into a room somtime and forget why. With my first dog (who had various old age ailments) when I asked my vet how you would know when it was time, my vet said "if you asked my dog now that my dog would laugh at me!" It is wonderful to know that Wilf shares that same laugh, and continues to happily enjoy being with you and the Font.

  2. Whenever I think about Wilf, I always imagine his personality to be much like my dad's beagle. Don't know why that is.

  4. Have spent the past hour catching up, the robbery, the move, the loss of Digby, Wilf's illness. You couldn't make this up, what a journey you have been on. Now drying my eyes, have a headache from crying, time for coffee! So glad to have found you, or am I? Of course I am, I'm hooked.

  5. Just adorable - love you Wilfie - so happy about the high quality life and love you have - so good to know that you run on love - hopefully forever- like my friends JRT - he goes on and on with liver and testicle cancer, blind, deaf - but smiling - he even jumps up to me every time I come to visit - agile as a cat - love from Southern Italy - Susanne, Daisy and Foxiie

  8. I guess we've all walked into a room and forgotten why we're there at some point. I guess that just means he's a little bit human! Hopefully it will pass as the holidays start approaching.

I hope you enjoyed the peace and quiet of the day!

  18. Glad to hear Wilf's still well. SHE often goes into a room and forget why SHE's there, so doesn't see that as problem.

Kendra is not well this morning...not interested in eating or barking at the milko.

The rest are having war games throughout the house because it's rainy and dismal outside.

  19. I remember clearly including Wilf in our Thanksgiving grace last year. So happy he had made it to November. Who knew he had no intention of going anywhere soon! I'm so very happy to include him in our Thanksgiving again this year. We shall raise a glass in his honour.
