Find the Meerkat.

Last night a great, old fashioned, mountain thunderstorm. With the electricity out we huddled in the upper hallway listening through the interference to a crackly St.Saens concert on our battery powered radio and trying to read by candlelight. Outside the rain plummeted down, the lightning wove patterns in the dark and what appeared to be a Jamaican steel band thundered away uninterruptedly in the attic. All we needed was Lurch from the Adams family to appear and we would have had the perfect gothic evening.

While 'the font' sat close to a candelabra, determined to reach the end of Tony Blairs memoirs, Wilf and yours truly set about playing touch rugby and rug surfing. Within ten minutes we were being firmly told that this was 'ridiculous' ( something to do with the dark, naked flames and breakages) so we reverted to that old standby - 'Find the Meerkat'. Usually, amid much nose down , zig-zag activity, the game of hide and seek takes three or four minutes. Last night , distracted by the raucous elements, Wilf took forever to find his latest squeaky toy. After twenty five minutes of fevered sniffing, barging into doors and tripping over furniture in the dark he finally found it. The next time I looked he was on his back, meerkat in mouth, snoring contentedly away and completely oblivious to the mayhem outside. A happy PON is guaranteed to generate laughter.

  1. All that extra effort wore him right out!

I don't know why but I really want a good rainstorm. We haven't had any in awhile.

  2. We haven't had a good ole thunderstorm for a long time; but, Kendra has to be held, so no wild games for us to pass the time.

  3. I hope that the Blair book was worth the inevitable eyestrain.....
    Cheers, Gail.
PS To answer your comment/question: it was low cloud driven in by a gale force easterly!

  4. Add our voice to the chorus that a good stormy night would be welcomed. Well, maybe not by Petey, but I don't mind him cuddling closer with every approaching thunderclap. Hurricane Earl was full of promise for a wind and rain-soaked day and all we ended up with were humid breezes and sprinkles that could easily be mistaken for drips from apartment air conditioners.

  5. *snicker* I can almost picture him with his sleuth hat and pipe as he pondered the clues to find the meerkat! I hope things are better for you this morning.

  6. We haven't had a good old fashioned thunderstorm all Summer - and living in a rickety old farmhouse too, I know too well what it's like - with balls of lightning coming out the electric plug-ins!! I'm sort of envious, but maybe we'll get one - even though it seems as if we've jumped into Fall really fast!1

  8. Why are they so achingly cute when they are asleep on their backs?? Just the sight of Edward in such a state makes everything right with the world.

  9. Hey Mongoose!
I had to pop by and find out what had effected the transition from "Mongoose to Meerkat"?
So Wilf didn't catch the Mongoose, right?

  10. Angus, I have thought of you so often these past few days and how you (and Caryl too) went through those agonizing days, deciding when the time is right to let go. I honestly thought Mica was going to pass away last night, instead I woke up at 2:00 am to find him sleeping contentedly on my arm. I had to be sure it wasn't a dream. And this morning he has been a bit more interested in food and water, a bit more alert, yet I can see his frustration why his once powerful athlete's body is no longer reacting as he expects. Knowing I have the empathy of so many shared experiences makes the burden (and the inevitability of the next few weeks or days) bearable. Thank you my friend.
