As it should be .

In the church the Saints statue is taken down from its niche and given its annual dusting. Across the lane , in the village hall , the lady with the beehive hairdo and the silver Ford Mondeo is setting up tables. Outside her husband and the man in the yellow day-glo yellow jacket are stacking logs. The mayor, the mayors wife , and the ever efficient town hall secretary are inspecting the oleanders in the churchyard. " The snow didn't do them any good " says the mayor. For emphasis , or possibly to help foreigners who might not understand the finer points of gardening , Madame Mayor points towards a shrivelled, clearly dead, bush. '' No good at all " she adds for good measure. We nod .

Wilf spends his day sleeping. The old fellow happily oblivious to the  preparations for the village Saints Day . He used to get up at six for the morning croissant run . Now he sleeps 'til nine . A quick breakfast of softened kibbles and chicken followed by a leisurely saunter in search of pigeon guano. The obligatory christening of the fire hydrant . Then there's time for a morning doze in the garden followed by an afternoon doze in the hallway . He joins ' the font ' in the kitchen before a pre-bedtime nap in the orchard . Exactly the way things should be . Gentle drifting .

Old PONs instinctively know : " time is too slow for those who wait , too swift for those who fear , too long for those who grieve , too short for those who rejoice , but for those who love , time is eternity ".

  4. Sending lots of love to Wilf, and also hoping that, on the days that he doesn't go with you to the village, he wakes up from his morning sleep to find half a croissant waiting for him (beside his kibble) from your visit to the village.

Every day should start with something good, and for us dogs what better way to start the day than with the foods we love and with the people we love.

    Woofs,
    Riley

  10. I am so happy that Wilf is still eating and going about his daily ways. Seeing his pictures this morning and what I think is a good report about Wilf has started my day with a happy heart.

I have gone back to the start of your blog and I am reading all of them again.Great pictures and stories of everybody's life. The pictures of Digby and Wilf are so wonderful, such beautiful boys.I look at them and can't but wanting two just like them. I know that each one has been a joy and a blessing to both of of you through the years.

May all of you have a blessed day together, enjoying each second you have. I will be praying for Wilf.

  12. I also went to bed way too late, as I wanted to check in on a sleepy corner of deepest France profonde. Petey just sighed, " everything's fine --it's the power of the paw" and snuggled closer. Snoring in mere seconds. Dogs the world over have been lavished with more love than usual these past few days.

  17. Just the opposite of Petey, I got up way too early to check in on your corner of France profonde. A sigh of relief, then back to sleep with thoughts of Wilf as he calmly drifts into the next chapter of his life.

    Love to you all!

  21. Each morning I get to work and go to my blog where I have a link to Wilf. With my cup of tea I check to see how Wilf and his parents are in deepest France. As a European History major decades and decades ago, I have decided I have learned much more about history, people and dogs from your blog than perhaps anywhere else. And Wilf is an old soul with an incredible grasp of life. As do you two.

Love from across the Pond, N

  23. Just trolling this afternoon and saw that you will be continuing to blog. I can hear the cascade of heartfelt sighs from all of your fans as each discovers this new chapter. It won't be the same without the wisdom of the old family fellow, but then perhaps he will have transmitted that wisdom to his faithful caretaker.

(Could you please eliminate the "capcha" function there -- after three tries I could not prove that I'm not a robot.)

    1. Google slipped in a capcha function without me knowing . I'll do my best to get rid of it on The Rickety old blog. Although, having said that , the new blogger format is still taking time to get used to and it may not be that easy!
