Aretha Franklin makes the front page.

Into town with Wilf . A cloudy, gunmetal tinted, start to the morning . The little cafe under the arcades open again after the New Year holiday. By the time we get there the beer and absinthe set are already into their second pre-breakfast libation . A chorus of ' Bonjour Wilfee's ' ripples round the tables. The waitress brings Wilf a bowl of water and a half croissant . Angus gets a burnt coffee. The daily routine of an old sheepdog and his owner .

The Paris newspapers have worthy analyses of the Iowa primaries. However, here in deepest France Profonde our local newspaper leads with the news that Aretha Franklin is to get engaged to her long-term friend Mr. William 'Willie' Wilkerson . Miss Franklins latest album, the front page article wrily informs its readers , is entitled ' A Woman Falling Out of Love '. Humour French style.

  1. Good to hear that the morning routine continues in 2012.

And I can't help but think that Aretha Franklin would be an infinitely more inspiring candidate for president than any of the current 'hopefuls' slogging it out in Iowa.....

    Cheers! Gail.

  2. Australia just opened up again after the holiday break....of course it won't get up to working speed until the end of January.

Didn't even know Aretha Franklin was still around...it brings back many memories of a miss-spent youth.

  4. You would think that the way it's being reported, that the Iowa primaries are the single event that decides the Republican candidate--Have you read that Newt Gingrich and the others are suing the state of Virginia because they didn't get their 10,000 signatures to be on the primary ballot and write-ins are not allowed? Newt should know, he's from Virginia...Politics...

Anyway, I do hope you and Wilf have an enjoyable day!!

  5. like wilf... i have no time for politics. give me the corner of a fresh croissant, a delicious scent to follow and lots of fresh cool water.
there is something so infinitely comforting in sharing a morning routine with your best fur friend. a scene i never tire of hearing about!
(does the absinthe crowd ever actually get around to eating!!?)
and as i close this, you and wilfee are no doubt eating a delicious font-style lunch in the france profonde.
    love,

  6. I am wondering if you can still sit outside at this time of year? It sounds like Wilf got the better deal with his half croissant compared to burnt coffee.

  7. Ah, the sublime Aretha. Husband informed me of her engagement this morning, but no headlines in Ireland. Agree with Gail - Aretha for President! Iowa and it's ilk (and the clowns on the Republican side) are some of the reasons I'm still an ex-pat. Wilf has the right idea - as perhaps do the Absinthe crowd :-)

  9. PS I often wonder if Calista Gingrich's hair ever moves, it is like a helmet.

  10. Too bad the other half of the croissant didn't show up so you could dunk something in the burnt coffee. Wilf looks positively cozy in the top pic. Keep on going Wilf!

  12. Hey Wilf,

can you stop by my blog and give us some advice. You are doing so well with your loss of eyesight and I have a friend who needs some help dealing with it.

    If you get the chance.

    Thanks
    Bert

  13. Well, perhaps Aretha will tie the knot in France! I guess news is in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think anyone would remember me or anything significant about me if they didn't see me with my dog!

  14. I'm always shocked at how much news you get about the US. We don't get very much news at all about France. At least, not from the newspapers I read or the news channels I watch.

    Burnt coffee?

  15. With the U.S. being home to some of the best and brightest, I am always amazed that these individuals are the best that can be scraped up when election time rolls around. Politics in general seems to have hit a new low all the way around.
Very, very happy to hear Wilf's good spirits are continuing into the new year.
    Love to all.

  16. I think I would have preferred Wilf's breakfast over yours. :)
