Background music .

Wet . Very wet . One of those days when the Atlantic rain seeps deep into your clothing . Wilf prefers to lie curled up indoors rather than go outside . Reluctantly he joins us for a late afternoon walk along the banks of the stream . '' It'll be good for you " I tell him . He looks unconvinced .

Ten thirty at night . The family fellow decides to turn in . He wanders into the dining room and is soon blissfully asleep in front of the fireplace . From time to time he passes wind . He's been given brussel sprouts with his evening kibbles so these interruptions are both more frequent and more highly pitched than usual . As the old year gives way to the new , the sound of a snoring, trumpeting sheepdog joins the skirl of the pipes and the clink of champagne glasses . The background music of a family house blessed with an old, faithful, friend . Laughter all round .

The mayor proposes a local toast . '' Love works its miracles every day, weakening the strong, strengthening the weak, making fools of the wise, and wise men of fools. Happy New Year ". The old widow finally smiles .

  4. Happy New Year to you, the Font and little Wilf. Actually stayed up to see the New Year in (well I am English!) and watched the fireworks on TV in London - for once they were really good.

  8. What an endearing image! Another of those vignettes you depict so well. We missed the first 37 minutes of the new year -- party animals such as we didn't quite make it to midnight but the firecrackers awakened us for a first smooch of 2012 before too long.

    Love to you all!

  11. Happy 2012! Kind of wishing it was raining here, instead we have gales and snow. LOTS of snow. But hey ho, onwards we go! Glad to hear the brussel sprouts are coming back to make their presence known ;) Ours each got a rather large piece of BBQ'd lake trout last evening and I think it is seeping from their pores this morning!

    Keep on going Wilf!

With love from your Canadian pals,

  12. Happy New Year to one and all; perfect beginning to 2012 knowing Wilf is content on this occasion sleeping by the fire. Wise words to remember from the mayor...DBH

  14. I had a good chuckle over the image of Wilf passing wind like an old lady in church, blissfully unaware of the consequences to those around him! It sounds like your ringing in of the new year was quite festive. Happy 2012!

  16. Happy new Year! What a lovely at home celebration. And so thoughtful to have included the old widow. Bless you again for your kindness.

The bravery of the Scots is legendary but I think you've blazed new territory in giving Wilf brussel sprouts! Delicious and healthful, but goodness, such flatulence! Hope you had some Bragg's biscuits on hand.
A joy filled day and year to follow to you. Our special love to Wilf.

  25. Ah, you describe simple scenes so beautifully. I especially liked your description of Wilf, the "snoring, trumpeting sheepdog".

    The mayor's toast was beautiful.

    May Wilf's miracle continue.

  26. I loved the Mayor's toast. Happy New Year to you all! Prayers for many, many more good days for Wilf and for you and the Font. The poor Widow tugs at my heartstrings. Thinking of her, as well. While I doubt she would understand the idea of blogging, nevertheless, she has a legion of folk who wish her well.
