We should do this more often.

It usually takes forty five minutes , maybe an hour , to make our way home from the airport. Yesterday , ' the font ' takes a new route . '' It's much more direct ", I'm told with an air of absolute certainty. We turn off the main road and head into the countryside . Two hours and ten minutes later we have passed the grand total of three cars, one white van ( coming in the opposite direction ) eleven dogs ( of various types ) and , bizarrely, one dead cow propped up against the side of a barn. We're lost . I'd thought we lived in deepest France Profonde . Now , thanks to ' the font ' I know there are parts of France that are much more Profonde .

Every hour we stop so that Wilf can be lifted down from the back of the car to ' stretch his legs ' . Our canine companion is in seventh heaven. New scents, new textures, new hints that there's a whole world of dogs out there that he's still to meet . An enthusiastic ' we should do this more often ' look on his face.

Night time at the rickety old farmhouse. Christmas decorations and the last of the family gone. Now just the two of us and our faithful companion. Outside, the stars, the moon, and the old farmers five megawatt star glow peacefully in the sky. Wilf settles down by the front door for a long, long restorative sleep . Old PON's seem to have the simple certainty of knowing " there is no wealth but life ".

  1. I love the moonlit photograph! Just like a Grimshaw painting.
Wilf's right, you should do that more often. Sounded like enormous fun.

  2. Was the farmer's five megawatt star not bright enough to guide you home? Sometimes the long way turns out to be the best way.

  5. I agree with Pamela and 10NISNE1 - your moonlit photo is incredible! So lovely to learn we're not the only people who get lost on 'short cuts' home too!

  7. Wow! You weren't exaggerating about that megawatt star were you? I love that peaceful photo. Does the font get to keep her title?

  8. Just look at that sweet face and we absolutely love the mystical farmhouse photo. It could be next year's Christmas card perhaps?

  11. Excellent photo, Angus. That star isn't really all that dreadful, now is it? And being lost wasn't either. Wilf had an excellent adventure and you and font were there to see him enjoy it. Thank goodness the tank of your car was full.

  14. Sometimes the best adventures happen when you don't know where you are! :) A dead cow propped against a barn sounds a bit morbid, though, even for France.

I wonder what would happen if you snuck over and removed a light bulb from the star. "One light goes out, they all go out..."

  15. Amazing photo of the farmhouse at night, moon and clouds, and the ubiquitous farmer's star. I too, have been on those tours of roads and countryside, which were supposed to be shortcuts. One time we ended up in a different state all together!! Love to Wilf!

  19. It sounds like you had an interesting day! Indeed there should be more trips like that. Two out of three of ours do well in the car, one not so much sadly. We don't have those splendid wandering trips very often. So glad to hear that Wilf was delighted with all the new senses that he found. Keep on going Wilf!

With love from your Canadian pals,

  20. I do enjoy taking "a more direct route" home sometimes too but I am also thankful I have a GPS, just in case. ;)

  21. The moonlit photo was a beautiful image to sleep on last night. Nice to imagine about Wilf snug inside there after his feast of scents.

  22. Well, I suppose it could have been worse, for both of you. But it turned into an "adventure," which seems good.

    Best of the new year.
