A brother to dragons .

In London to speak to a group of shiny suited oil men. En route to dinner, caught in an unexpected downpour , I shelter inside a Wren church . I'm there out of practicality , not piety , but the words from an evensong reading catch my ears : " I am a brother to dragons , and a companion to owls ". Words with the mystery and beauty of a different age . Try slipping dragons and owls into a conversation today . While the language of Shakespeare may be superb , the poetry of the King James Bible is quite simply, divine.

Next morning , time enough before my flight to do some shopping. To Harrods for some ' blind dog ' toys for Wilf ( more about these tomorrow , so far a huge, huge success ) . Then onto Fortnums to buy a walnut and coffee cake, some sausages, and some of their old fashioned fudge. Home in the afternoon. The ever practical ' font ' examines these purchases and wonders outloud whether I had been shopping for a six year old . I ask Wilf what he thinks of my shopping skills. The old fellow points his nose towards the sausages and coffee cake as if to say " Brilliant ! Absolutely brilliant ! ". A boy after my own heart . He has half a pork and fresh leek sausage for dinner . A new toy, half a sausage and a reunited family. Can it get any better ?

  1. All men shop for 6 year olds!

'Blind dog' toys sound interesting, looking forward to Wilf testing them out.

  3. Ah London, such variety and contrast in so small an area. Your post makes me think of the Samuel Johnson quote 'when a man is tired of London he is tired of life'.

  12. First, having just read Bertie's blog, I am intrigued by the relationship between walnut coffee cake and the bending of light chez Wilf.

Second, that you can carry food purchased outside of security for transport on a plane brings back nostalgia for the pre-OBL days.

Third, A.A. Milne would think your shopping skills were just fine! More details on the kind of sausage would have been appreciated -- along with photos of blind dog toys.

  15. Glad you brought back necessities for Wilf, Angus.

The last photograph reminds me of another King James Bible quotation, Psalm 91:11, "For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways."

    Wilf is angelic, as always...

  17. Ah, beautiful words. But unlike Job, Wilf faces his trials with a smile and says, "Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant!".
