Farmhouse TLC .

Time for the rickety old farmhouse to receive some TLC. After the long hot summer and the flash flood the old building is showing signs of wear and tear. ' Subsidence ' says the mayor helpfully as he stops by to see what's been happening and have a glass of champagne .

Six months ago we'd asked the local builder to come along and repair various cracks in the facade and strengthen a portion of the garden wall which is leaning at a somewhat jaunty angle .Nothing more was heard of this builder despite bi-weekly " When will we see you ?" calls to his answer machine. Local tradesmen all seem to spend long sojourns in that special place where there is no mobile, or indeed any form of telephony . ' The font ' believes this special place is called a beach on the Seychelles .

So it was that yesterday morning a new construction crew arrived. Wilf is already very much taken with them. They all, without exception, chat to him and provide under chin tickles . Now that the formal introductions have been made Wilf has high hopes that they might be biscuit people. Maybe even Jaffa Cake people.

Eight o'clock at night and guess what ? The original builder shows up and says he's ready to start work tomorrow. He is sent politely away. Typical. Wilf doesn't even bother barking at him .

  1. I would ask if it is worth it, but then I remember my last new house. Seems like builders have the upper hand no matter what!

  3. Well I take it as good news, that there is still somewhere in the world beyond the reach of the mobile. Even if it does only exist in the head of a French tradesman.

  4. Jaffa cake people - have a good day - and there is a spy system where workmen get informed if something happens...

  5. Are your sure that the mayor didn't say 'sustenance' instead of 'subsidence?' because your champagne seems to be his favorite.

I do think that Wilf is reminding us of what good judges of character dogs can be!

  6. Biscuits? Jaffa Cakes? Wilf knows how to manipulate everyone!

Yet again, the font's dry sense of humor had me laughing. Construction workers here seem to go to that same beach.

  7. Incredibly efficient workers over there in your corner! Good thing the house continues to stand during the long wait for work to commence. You and The Font have incredible patience! Cheers!

  9. The attitude of contractors must be global. The economy here in the States is horrible but it is still difficult to get someone to do work on your home. I've tried all summer to have a brick patio set in - just made an appointment to have it done in the spring☺. So happy to see that Wilf is making some new friends, hopefully ones with food!

  12. That sounds alot like the construction type people we have in our city!! No one returns calls, and if they do, its months after the initial call. Shame. As always tho, Wilf is looking rather dashing!! Keep on going Wilf!

  13. Wilf seems to be a very good judge of character so I am sure this new crew will get the job done and get it done right! :)

  16. Wilf is a very good judge of character -- that's why he didn't so much as acknowledge the first builder with a bark!
