The horse and the coachman .

Ladders, scaffolding and paint pots everywhere. The obstacle course otherwise known as life at the rickety old farmhouse . Some shutters are up , others are down . Some are closed while others are left open to let the bats nest , undisturbed, behind them . Last year it was bees , this year it's baby bats . Life is never dull . Of course now we've started to paint outside it's begun to rain incessantly .

On the dot of seven the mayor stops by to admire the hand forged eighteenth century nails in the woodwork . That, at least , is the reason he gives for appearing , smiling, at the front gate . Having commented on the ironwork he seems to be in no apparent rush to leave . So , he is offered, and graciously accepts , a glass of champagne . Like Prince Charles the mayor is of a school that believes one should never drink before seven in the evening . That may of course explain why we only tend to see him at that time of day. As they would say in Scotland, any excuse for a 'wee chat and a libation '.

Wilf sits quietly on the terrace listening to the conversation and wondering what's happening to the canapes . Despite his infectious optimism he has a suspicion that " it's always the same in this world. The horse does the work and the coachman gets tipped " .

  1. I wonder who will play the mayor in the movie? :)

  2. I have to agree with you - never a dull moment at your house! Which may be why the mayor likes to stop by for a glass of champagne. :)

  3. Hmm.. in the canape department, the font would appear to be the horse and Mongoose the coachman. We expect the mayor was lavish in his praise of the canapes as well as the libations. Maybe, like Mme Bey, the mayor just wanted to spend some quality time with Wilf.

  4. Somehow reading your post about 'every day life' at 3 AM, is providing comfort about life continuing despite my wanting to jump off.

Mayors come and go but it is so important to keep them friendly especially here in S. I.

who is the mayor kidding here... the font is famous for her cuisine now, if for nothing but the heavenly smells emanating from your rickety old beautiful farmhouse. come on, ongoose... he's waggling an invite to dinner!!! ;)

  10. Champagne? We're surprised that the sound of the cork alone doesn't draw them in from a miles radius. Next time, you might serve some of the wine that comes in those nasty blue bottles. It could be paired with that aerosol cheese available in certain countries for hikers, campers and those desiring triple coronary bypass. Now, won't that be a surprise. More canapes for our boy!
Happy Fathers Day! All of our love.
(We love to see Wilf laugh!)

  12. You mean Wilf didn't get any canapes?! No! I simply can't believe it! I can't say that I blame the mayor for dropping by, though. :)
